what does löyl mean?

it comes from the finnish word löyly, the steam that lifts off the stones when you pour water over them. finns call it the spirit of the sauna. we took that and made it our own, löyl. say it out loud and you'll catch the other half: loyal. the kind that sticks with you no matter what. that's the idea. however hot it gets in there, our gear rides with you.

what does löyl make?

things you'll actually want to wear in the heat, made from natural materials. first out of the gate is our cowboy sauna hat, made from natural wool felt and coloured with natural dye. there's more in the works, and the folks on our waitlist hear about it first.

where is löyl based?

designed in london, made by hand in nepal, in small workshops that know wool felt and natural dye inside out.

what are löyl sauna hats made of?

100% wool felt, ultra-dense at 8mm thick. wool's been the sauna's go-to since forever, for good reason: it insulates, soaks up sweat without going soggy, and stays safe against your skin when the heat climbs. the colour comes from natural dye. nothing synthetic gets a look in.

why does the dye matter as much as the wool?

because most brands hope you won't ask. synthetic dye can carry heavy metals, and hot, sweaty skin is about the easiest route for that stuff to get into your body. that's why the colourful sauna hats out there are almost always vague about what's actually in the dye, or just don't bother making colourful ones at all. every hat worth trusting is beige, and every colourful one goes quiet right about here. löyl refuses that trade-off. we hold the dye to the exact same standard as the wool, and we built a sourcing process to trace every ingredient, including the colour, back to where it came from.

what dyes do you use?

all natural, all traceable. indigo plants for the blue, lac resin for the pink. we set the colour with alum, a naturally occurring mineral salt mordant, and mix the vats with spring water from the himalayas. the whole recipe is plants, resin, mineral salt and mountain water: no chrome, no heavy metals, nothing hiding in small print.

are löyl products non-toxic?

yes, properly. just wool and natural dye, free of pfas, bpa and formaldehyde finishes. the rule we set ourselves is simple: nothing goes on your body in the heat that we wouldn't wear on our own, and that rule applies to the colour just as much as the wool.

care

how do i care for my sauna hat?

hang it up to air after every session and it's good for the next one. give it a hand-wash in cool water only when it really needs one, and never wring it or send it through the machine. press the water out gently, reshape it, leave it flat to dry, out of the sun. treat it right and it'll be hanging on your hook for years.

what's your returns policy?

if your hat doesn't win you over, send it back unworn and in its original condition within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. no hard feelings.
