what does löyl mean?

It comes from löyly, the Finnish word for the steam that rises when water meets hot stones.

who makes löyl?

We're Sophie and Will. We make wool sauna hats in small numbered drops. They're made by hand in the foothills of the Himalayas. The colours in löyl bloom come from a dye house in Nepal run by Shanti and her daughter Sara. We're based in London.

how do drops work?

We make each design once, in a small numbered drop. Every hat gets its own number on its tag, written by hand. When a drop sells out, it's gone.

how does early access work?

Leave your email and you get 48 hours to buy new hats before anyone else. When a drop opens, we email everyone on our list a code. Type it on the drop page and the shop opens for you. 48 hours later it opens to everyone.

will you make more?

Each numbered drop is made once, so we won't restock a colour once it's gone. A design can come back later as a new drop, in new colours. The list hears first.

do you do discounts?

We don't run sales. The only discount codes go to a few UK sauna masters we work with, as a thank you for their support.

what is löyl bloom?

Drop 02. A bell-shaped wool hat with a tie dye look, in four colours: moss, lake, ember and flush. 100 made: 40 in moss, 40 in ember, 10 in lake and 10 in flush.

what is it made of?

100% wool, made by hand in the foothills of the Himalayas. The woven label on the outside is cotton.

what is the colour made from?

Moss is dyed with himalayan rhubarb, turmeric and myrobalan. Ember with lac resin and myrobalan. Lake with indigo plants. Flush with lac resin. Every colour is set with alum, and every tag names its own dyes. Lac resin is made by an insect, so we say plants and resin, not plant-based.

why natural dyes for this drop?

For löyl bloom we wanted colours we could name all the way down, and show you where they came from. Each tag lists exactly what that hat was dyed with.

why wear a hat in the sauna?

Heat rises, so your head gets hot first. Wool slows that down and lets the rest of you catch up. And it makes the person next to you smile.

will the colour change?

Yes, slowly. Natural colour softens with heat and time. After a winter on the bench your hat will look a little different from the day it arrived. No two look quite the same to begin with.

what size is it?

One size.

care

how do i look after it?

Rinse it by hand in cool water and don't wring it. Reshape it while it's damp and let it dry out of the sun.
