naturally dyed: where the colour comes from
indigo and lac, mixed by hand in the foothills of the himalayas. where the blue and the pink actually come from.
long before there were factories, there was the land. people drew colour out of plants and pressed it into cloth, and they did it for thousands of years before anyone thought to brew dye in a lab. our hats are coloured the old way, by hand, in a small family dye house in the foothills of the himalayas, run by women who learned it from the people before them. two things make the colour. a plant, and a resin. that’s the whole palette.

indigo, the blue
indigo is the one that still looks like magic. and the strange part is that it isn’t blue to begin with.
the blue hides in the leaves of indigofera tinctoria, a scrubby little member of the pea family, locked inside a colourless compound called indican. the cut leaves are left to ferment in water, and over a day or so the indican breaks down into indoxyl, leaving a murky yellow-green liquid behind. no blue anywhere yet. then the air does the work. as the liquid is stirred and oxygen gets into it, the colour lifts to the surface as a deep blue froth. that froth is skimmed off and left to dry, where it hardens into crystals of pure pigment. those crystals are what goes into the vat.
from there the wool is dipped, and dipped again, each pass laying the blue down a little deeper, from pale sky after one to something near midnight after ten. people have been coaxing blue out of these plants for thousands of years, from egypt to japan, and nobody has found a better way.


lac, the pink
the pink comes from a resin, and its story is older and stranger than most people expect.
it’s called lac, a natural resin secreted by a tiny insect that lives on certain trees across india and southeast asia. the resin forms a hard crust over the branches, and it carries a deep red colour from a family of compounds called laccaic acids. people have used it to colour wool and silk for thousands of years. the sanskrit word it comes from, laksha, means a hundred thousand, a nod to just how much of it the work takes.

you may already know the resin without realising. refined a different way, the same material becomes shellac, the finish on old furniture and older records. on wool it gives anything from soft rose to deep ruby, depending on how the bath is mixed.
one honest note, since we list everything plainly: because lac is animal in origin, the pink isn’t vegan. the blue is. we’d rather you knew than find out later.
fixing the colour
a dye that rinses straight back out is no use, so the colour is set with alum, a naturally occurring mineral salt that dyers have leaned on for centuries. it helps the colour bond to the wool and hold through heat and water. the whole process runs on spring water from the hills around the dye house, which sounds like a romantic detail and is one, but soft mountain water genuinely behaves differently in the bath than hard tap water does.
why no two are the same
colour drawn from the land doesn’t behave like a paint chip. the shade shifts with the season the plants were cut, the minerals in the water, how warm the day was, how long the wool sat in the bath. every batch lands a little different, and we don’t try to flatten that out. the variation is the point. it’s the mark of a colour that was grown rather than printed.
working with what’s there
none of this is fast, and that’s deliberate. the dye house is small and family-run, and sara and shanti read a vat by eye the way you’d read the weather. the wool turns up undyed and leaves in colours that came out of the plants and the trees around them. it’s the oldest way to put colour on cloth, and after a few thousand years, it still works.
