the physics of 8mm wool: why density is everything in extreme heat
thin felt is a suggestion. here's the actual physics behind why thickness, not just fibre, decides whether a sauna hat works.
not all wool felt sauna hats are equal, and the difference usually isn’t the wool. it’s the thickness. a lot of what’s sold as a sauna hat is felted to somewhere between 1 and 6mm, thin enough to look the part without doing the job. ours is felted to 8mm, and that number is doing more work than it looks like on paper.
insulation is a numbers game
wool insulates because its fibres are crimped and covered in microscopic scales that trap pockets of still air between them, and still air is one of the best insulators there is. more felt means more trapped air, means a thicker barrier between the heat and your scalp. thin felt still has the right fibre, it just doesn’t have enough of it. heat finds its way through a 2mm layer far faster than an 8mm one, especially once the air around your head is pushing past 90°c.
it’s not just about heat going in
dense felt also handles moisture better. wool is hygroscopic: it draws sweat and steam into the core of the fibre rather than letting it sit on the surface, and it can hold close to a third of its own weight in moisture before it starts to feel wet. an 8mm felt has far more capacity to do this than a thin one, which is why a proper wool hat doesn’t turn into a soggy cap halfway through a long session.
why brands skimp on thickness
thicker felt costs more: more wool, more time on the felting machines, more weight to ship. cutting it down to 2 or 3mm is the easiest way to shave cost off a “wool sauna hat” without changing the label. it still says 100% wool. it just doesn’t insulate like one.
what 8mm actually gets you
wool is also naturally antimicrobial (lanolin, the fibre’s natural wax, doesn’t give bacteria much to work with) and it holds its shape through repeated heat and moisture cycles without breaking down, both of which matter more the denser the felt is. an 8mm hat isn’t just warmer at the start of a session, it’s still doing its job on session five hundred. that’s the entire reason we felt to 8mm and not a millimetre less.
