plant power: how indigo & lac create vivid, non-toxic dyes
no lab, no petroleum. just plants, resin, mineral salt and mountain water, and a process built so we can trace every batch back to its source.
most colourful things you own were dyed in a lab. a sauna hat sitting against your scalp at 90°c is a bad place for that to be true, so ours isn’t. every colour löyl makes comes from a plant, a resin, or a mineral. nothing synthetic gets anywhere near the wool.
the blue: indigo
our blue starts as an indigo plant, grown and harvested by hand. the leaves are boiled in water and left to ferment, which is where the colour actually happens: as the mixture breaks down, bubbles rise to the surface carrying pigment with them. those bubbles are skimmed off, dried, and pressed into the deep blue crystals that become our raw dye.
it’s a slow process, and it’s supposed to be. indigo has been dyed this way for thousands of years, long before synthetic “indigo” (which, despite the name, is usually a petrochemical dye designed to mimic the real thing) existed at all.
the pink: lac resin
the pink is stranger, and better. it comes from the lac insect, which lives on trees across india, thailand and nepal and feeds on their sap. as it feeds, it secretes a resin (a natural defence mechanism) that happens to be a rich, deep pink. that resin is harvested, cleaned, and used as our raw pigment. it’s the same base material shellac is made from, which tells you something about how tough and stable it is once it’s set.
setting the colour: alum
pigment alone doesn’t stay put on wool. it needs a mordant, something to bond the colour to the fibre so it doesn’t wash or sweat straight back out. we use alum, a naturally occurring mineral salt, mixed into vats of himalayan spring water. no chrome, no heavy metals, nothing borrowed from a chemistry set that has no business near your head.
why this is the whole point
synthetic dyes are cheap and consistent, which is exactly why most colourful sauna hats use them, and exactly why so few brands will tell you what’s actually in the dye. heat opens your pores. sweat is an excellent solvent. that combination is precisely how anything unwanted in a dye ends up somewhere it shouldn’t.
we built our sourcing process around one rule: every ingredient in a löyl hat gets traced back to where it came from, colour included. that’s why no two batches are ever quite identical: real plants and real resin vary, season to season, harvest to harvest. we think that’s a feature, not an inconsistency to engineer away.
